SCAVENGER HUNT! FIND THESE ARCHITECTURAL ECCENTRICITIES AROUND MIAMI

Miami is renowned for its stunning beaches, lively nightlife, and a mix of diverse neighborhoods. Look beyond the glitz and glamour and you’ll also discover a treasure trove of architectural eccentricities that set this city apart.

The Opa-Locka City Hall

What is the capital of Moorish architecture in the Western hemisphere? Turns out that Opa-Locka has the most Moorish-style buildings than any other place in this part of the world. Its crown jewel, The Opa-Locka City Hall, was first constructed in the 1920s by developer Glenn Curtiss who gleaned inspiration from the eras’ Arabian-themed blockbuster movies. Its towering dome and intricate tilework appear as a mirage in the middle of a bustling city.

The Bacardi Buildings, Downtown Miami

The iconic Bacardi Buildings in downtown Miami are known for their stunning modernist architecture, consisting of the Bacardi Imports Tower and the Bacardi Imports Administration Annex, commonly known as “The Jewel Box”. Designed by Cuban architect Enrique Gutierrez and built in 1963, The Bacardi Imports Tower (also called “the blue tile building”) features the Azulejo murals by Brazilian artist and ceramist Francisco Brennand on two of the building’s walls. Ten years later in 1973, the Bacardi Imports Administration Annex was constructed. “The Jewel Box”, designed by Ignacio Carrera-Justiz of Coral Gables, Florida, received its name because of the Mesoamerican-themed mosaic by German artist Johannes M. Dietz that adorns its outer walls.

Temple Israel, Wynwood

Nestled in the heart of Miami’s vibrant Wynwood neighborhood, Temple Israel stands as a testament to architectural innovation and cultural diversity. What makes this synagogue truly unique is its bold departure from traditional religious architecture. Designed by renowned architect Kenneth Treister and built in 1928, Temple Israel’s exterior is a striking blend of modern and postmodern influences, featuring a facade adorned with vividly colored stained glass windows, expressive geometric shapes, and abstract sculptures. The use of concrete and mosaics adds a touch of artistic complexity to the structure, reflecting the eclectic spirit of the Wynwood Arts District. Its architectural fusion mirrors the diverse community it serves, embracing inclusivity and symbolizing the harmony between faith and contemporary art.

The McFarlane Homestead Historic District, Coconut Grove

The original nineteen acres were sold to Coral Gables founder George Merrick’s development firm by Flora MacFarlane, the area’s first female homesteader, in 1925, to create what is now known as The McFarlane Homestead Historic District. Currently made up of less than thirty-two homes, this area beckons history enthusiasts, architecture aficionados, and anyone with an appreciation for the unique. These early 20th-century residences, built during Miami’s infancy, exhibit a delightful mix of architectural elements. Here, visitors will find homes with enchanting turrets that evoke a sense of fairy-tale charm, whimsical facades adorned with intricate woodwork, and hidden gardens that offer an enchanting escape from the bustling city.

One notable aspect of the McFarlane Homestead Historic District’s architectural appeal is the exceptional craftsmanship of these homes. They exemplify the craftsmanship of an era gone by, featuring original Dade County pine flooring, inviting front porches, and intricate gables that make every home in the district a unique piece of Miami’s history.
